Sometimes the most unexpected herb plants can inspire a container herb garden.

One of my planters had a volunteer feverfew plant growing in it. Not just any feverfew, but a healthy feverfew that had grown much faster than the feverfew in my garden.

This self-started feverfew herb plant was starting to bloom when the feverfew in my garden was only a couple of inches high!

Now I wouldn’t normally plant feverfew in a container – it grows abundantly enough in the garden.  But this one was just too lovely to pull out.

I also had a  Tricolour Sage herb plant still sitting in its little pot.  I had been at Vandermeer Nursery a few days prior buying tricolour sage for a border in the front yard.

And there was one herb plant that stood out from the rest.   Its leaves had much more of the creamy white splotches than the other tricolour sage plants there.

It didn’t fit with the other tricolor sage for my border, but I decided it was coming home with me anyway 🙂

So I figured, what the heck, let’s plant the tricolor sage in the planter with the feverfew.  The sage herb plant will grow taller and add colour to the container as the feverfew finishes blooming.

I added a couple of parsley plants to the container – a flat-leaf and a curled – because in my house you can never have too much parsley. And I like parsley’s vibrant green against the feverfew and tricolour sage herbs.

I placed the planter on the flagstone step on our deck.  It looks lovely and is situated near my kitchen for easy access.

Container herb gardens are functional and beautiful.  And sometimes it’s fun to let your herb plants inspire you to pull together your own customized container herb garden 🙂
