Time To Order Your Herb Seeds :-)

Just a quick reminder:  If you are planning to order herb, vegetable or flower seeds online and you haven’t done so yet, now is a good time to place your order 💻  And if you’re looking for an online seed store for herbs, check out my choices lower down in this article.

On the fence about growing herbs from seed?  Here’s why I grow some of my herbs from seed:
🌱 there’s a wider selection of seed varieties to choose from — just for fun, check out the number of varieties of basil Richters offers 🙂
🌱 some herbs don’t transplant well and are best planted from seed where they will be growing – i.e. parsley, dill, cilantro/coriander – any herb or vegetable that grows
a taproot especially
🌱 it’s an economical way to grow many plants – my family goes through a lot of basil and parsley so starting those from seed saves me money over buying a bunch of
nursery plants

If you’re looking for a site to order seeds from, check out my favourite online seed stores below. Although I buy some seeds from other online stores and local garden centers, these seed houses are my regular go-tos. All four of these seed stores offer non-GMO and untreated seed, and ship seeds to both US and Canada. Two of these seed houses are based in the US, and two are based in Canada (no, I didn’t plan it that way  😄 ).

I have ordered many times from  these sites, and have been happy with their seeds and customer service. Some of the links may be affiliate links, which means I may earn a small commission if you use my link to go to their website and purchase from them. Richters Herbs
Richters is my hands down choice for their selection of herb seeds! I have been buying herb seeds and plants from Richters for over 25 years; this is a cool place  💚  💚

Herbs are their specialty, so if you’re searching for something specific, chances are they have it. Richters also offers a selection of vegetable seeds, dried herbs, oils and books. You can also pre-order herb plants which they ship out when the weather allows for it.

Located in Goodwood, Ontario (Canada), Richters also has a greenhouse full of herbs for personal shopping. If you are up for a drive, their greenhouse and retail store is a fun place to visit for herb lovers. Richters is also accessible by GO transit from Toronto.

West Coast Seeds
I initially came across West Coast Seeds at my local garden centre a few years ago. The seeds I bought grew well, so I looked them up online and have beeen ordering from them ever since.

They offer a great online selection of non-GMO vegetable, herb and flower seeds, as well as seeds and supplies for sprouting and growing microgreens. Each year, I see West Coast Seeds packets in more garden centers, and in natural food markets.

West Coast Seeds also has a retail store in Ladner, British Columbia (Canada), offering seeds, tools, and gifts.

Baker Creek Seeds
I came across Baker Creek seeds about the same time as West Coast Seeds. Their selection of unique heirloom seeds was mesmerizing, and the seeds I bought grew well also. They offer a huge selection of vegetable and flower seeds, and a good selection of herb seeds  🌱

And if you love curling up with a seed catalog (my favourite winter gardening activity), their Whole Seed Catalog with over 500 pages of heirlooms is a delight!

Baker Creek has a seed store and a pioneer village in Mansfield, Missouri (US) — an awesome family outing and seed shopping all in one place! Baker Creek also runs a seed store in Petaluma, California (US).

Seed Savers Exchange
I have been ordering seeds from Seed Savers Exchange for almost as long as I’ve been shopping at Richters, for over 25 years. Yikes! I’m dating myself  😆

Seed Savers Exchange is a non-profit dedicated to protecting biodiversity and preserving heirloom varieties. They offer a wide range of vegetable, flower and herb seeds for sale – another fun online shop!

Purchasing seeds from seed savers exchange also helps support their non-profit work. Learn more abont their mission and shop the seed store at seedsavers.org

In addition, most garden centres have their selection of seeds available now also — just in case you are looking for an excuse to visit your local garden centre ☺️

Basil, borage, cilantro/coriander, dill, salad burnet, parsley, and savory are some herbs I like to grow from seed.  What herbs do you like to grow from seed?

Also, I’d love to hear your favourite places to shop for seeds ☺️  Take a moment, and drop me a note below in the comments below.

Happy Gardening ☺️
