Herb Dip For Veggies – Creamy Delicious and Easy To Make

Years ago, when my kids were younger and I was trying to get them to eat veggies, I went searching on the internet for a veggie dip that was better than the store-bought dips 🥕🥦

I found one we all liked, and have been making variations of this creamy herb dip every since.  It’s become a party hit too! 🎈 (Makes for an awesome chip dip as well).

In the winter, I use dried herbs as in the recipe – in the summer I substitute fresh herbs from my garden for a fresher tasting dip.

Here’s the original recipe:

1 cup mayonnaise
1/2 cup sour cream
1/2 tsp dried chives
1/2 tsp dried parsley
1/2 tsp dried dillweed
1/4 tsp garlic powder
1/4 tsp onion powder
1/8 tsp salt
1/8 tsp ground black pepper

Mix all ingredients together.  Refrigerate for 1/2 hr before serving.

More often than not, I will mix the dip up and serve it right away, but it does taste better if you let it sit for a bit.

Wish I could confirm where I originally got this recipe from.  I went searching the internet and  found an identical recipe on https://www.allrecipes.com/recipe/16131/ranch-dressing-ii/

As much as it’s called a ranch dressing and my copy calls it a ranch dip, there is no buttermilk in the recipe (a common ingredient in ranch dressings that I was never fond of)

Variations and Substitutions:

🥦To make a lighter, healthier dip, swap out the sour cream and some of the mayonnaise with yogurt.  There is a tipping point in my family – I can either replace the sour cream with yogurt, or 1/2 the mayonnaise with yogurt and keep the sour cream before the difference becomes overly detectable to unsuspecting palates.

🥦Substitute the dried herbs for fresh – replace 1/2 tsp dried herb with 1-1/2 tsp fresh herbs.  Makes for a lovely fresher tasting dip.  Once gardening season hits, I always opt for the fresh herbs.

🥦If substituting fresh onion or shallot (I prefer the shallot) for the onion powder or garlic for the  garlic powder,  dice the onion/garlic very finely and smash to a paste.  When using fresh onion and garlic, I find letting the dip sit overnight really helps the flavours incorporate better as raw onion and garlic can be overwhelming.
